3BF002 : Duke Spook "Dead Weight EP" : Released 21/04/08

Duke Spook is the alter ego of electronic stalwart, Tony Stone. Hailing from Sheffield his musical output sits uncomfortably amongst music from people like Burial, Pinch and the burgeoning dubstep scene. Duke eschews elements of his industrial past into his whirling brew of thumped up electronica, constantly underpinning 2-step drum patterns with Brian Eno like swabs of drawling ambience.

Steaming in quickly with 'Crosswaves', Duke Spook wears his intentions on his sleeve for 'Dead Weight', his debut EP for digital label 3 Bar Fire, as he melds the rich thick bass line with a brazen garage rhythm, all the while engulfing the elements in a atmospheric mesh of voices and synth washes.

'Duul's Rage Against Jah', (lovingly dubbed 'The Digital Elephant', by 3BF's Chief) steers Spook into a harder edged, more fearsome direction, as if it was created by an dub obsessed, attention deficit sufferer in his studio that's hidden from view in a baron domain where distortion and delay rule supreme.

'Brooklyn Bridge' has a distinct air of echo to it's melody as Spook turns the tempo notch slightly to the right, adding quick pounding kicks and snares that repeatedly perforate the heady mix of warped, low end. Finishing strong on 'Futurepasts', the Duke bends your preconceptions a little adding a bassline that wouldn't seem out of place on an aging DJ Dougal tape pack before applying his temperate fingers over some flickery drum programming and saxophone samples.

Tony Stone has in the past released music on Flagbearer/Labworks UK, Kickin, Earworm, MTB and Hard Leaders. His catalogue of releases act as a testament to a producer who has matured from his early days working with DJ Hype and The Scientist.

Sparo
3BF001 : Sparo "The Falling" : Released 17/12/07

The one known as Sparo had an interesting childhood.

"I first came into contact with the Sirians as a child. One night in a Devonshire cottage an intense white light streaming through the curtains awaked me. In the glare I could make out a figure standing still and silently before me. The form told me without words that I was not to feel fear, our planet had always been under their control and that one day, soon, there will come a time where only good will be, all the evil and lies will be crushed by an understanding of love. And with this they gave me my name 'Sparo' and a MPC2000XL to help people of this planet understand what that meant and help destroy evil."

How could 3 Bar Fire refuse to assist such a noble cause? Rising to the challenge, the most discerning web portal initiated the launch of the first wave of Sparo's love crusade, 'The Falling', a hymn representing the descent to Earth by his alien self.

Three valiant warriors were enlisted to shape 'The Falling' in their own form.

Firstly Joey2Tits gave it boot up the arse; glitching the fuck out of the original's serenity, transforming what was once a peaceful message into a rave anthem. Then My Left Retina took it downtown, surfing the underground, distorting sounds and giving them a b-movie shakedown. Lastly Mexican Institute of Sound downed a bottle of tequila, wrapped up a burrito and took a siesta while checking out senoritas getting down to their mix.

Who knows how the magic of Sparo works, but work it does.
